MASERU — A 32-year-old man from Quthing was last week sentenced to four years in prison for torching a house belonging to a man he allegedly found in bed with his wife.

The court heard that the two lovers were inside the house when Mavuso Tomose, in a fit of anger, lit the roof.

The man only identified as Jase and Tomose’s wife escaped unhurt. Jase’s house was however razed to ashes.

Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said the two suspected lovers were allegedly caught in the act by Jase’s wife who had unexpectedly returned home from shopping.

Jase’s wife, Masupha said, rushed to call Tomose.

“She went to the village to call Tomose to come and see his wife and her husband,” Masupha said.

“Tomose was very furious that he burned Jase’s house.

“Tomose was arrested at the scene on April 12 and appeared in court on April 13.”

He appeared before magistrate Rabuka Chalatsi and was charged with arson.

The magistrate found him guilty and slapped him with a four-year jail sentence.

Tomose might however escape jail if he pays a M5 000 fine and rebuild Jase’s house.

He was given until the end of October to rebuild the house.

Meanwhile, in Botha-Bothe an 18-year-old man was stabbed to death on April 10 by a 17-year-old man in Qalo following an argument over a hat.

“The suspect had borrowed the victim’s hat but was now refusing to give it back,” Masupha said.

“The suspect stabbed the victim who died on the spot.”

In another incident the chief of Thabana-Morena reported the death of two women aged 33 and 55 who were allegedly murdered on April 11.

Police have since arrested a 52-year-old in connection with the murder.

“The man handed himself to the chief and told him that he had beaten the two women to death during an argument,” Masupha said.

“He had asked his wife why she was still at a drinking place late then the two women started insulting him.”

In Mohale’s Hoek, a 59-year-old man was on April 11 beaten to death by an 88-year-old man following an argument during a drinking binge.

The two men had a fight after having some misunderstanding while they were drinking traditional beer, according to Masupha.

“The man was declared dead at hospital, the suspect was arrested and police are still investigating.”
