The announcement was made at a press conference at the brewery’s head office in Maseru on Friday.
King Letsie III celebrated his 47th birthday on July 17 and the race in his honour will be organised by the Mohale’s Hoek horse racing club on August 8.
Speaking at the ceremony the MMB’s national sales manager Lechesa Tikiso said the company was a proud partner of the king’s birthday celebrations.
“Every year in this month we help to organise this horse race to honour the King,” Tikiso said.
“This year through the Maluti Premium Lager brand we are giving M30 000,” he said.
Tikiso said the partnership between the MMB and the King’s Birthday horse race was an extensive one which was about more than just racing but a way of giving back to the community.
“This is a marriage of over 20 years, it started during the time of King Moshoeshoe II and it has continued until now,” Tikiso said.
“This is not just about racing but this has become a business for the owners of the horses. They will use the money they get from this race to feed and take care of their horses and the rest will be used to help their families,” Tikiso said.
“On the Saturday before the race there will be a feast called Maluti Night. The venue will be known as the event approaches,” Tikiso said.
The vice-chairperson of the Mohale’s Hoek horse racing club Elias Mokhethi thanked MMB for the sponsorship.
“We thank God, the king and the brewery,” Mokhethi said.
“Horse racing is what is loved most by the people of Lesotho. This sponsorship has helped give a real reward to those who take part in the race,” he said.
Mokhethi said he expected the number of participants in the race to grow.
