MASERU — Former Lesotho Football Association (Lefa) public relations officer, Baba Malephane has been appointed assistant general coordinator for the 2014 CHAN tournament currently in South Africa.
A delighted Malephane, who is in Cape Town for the tournament, said he was thrilled by his growing stature within the structures of the Confederation of African Football (Caf).
“I’m very grateful that Caf has given me such a big responsibility at this tournament. It is really an honour for me and my country,” Malephane said.
Malephane said the recognition was the fruit of his previous efforts of organising tournaments in the past.
“I guess this is a reward for the hard work and commitment which shows that I must have done something right working in similar positions in the past”, Malephane said.
He attributed his advancememt in football organising structures to Lefa “who allowed me to continue serving various football bodies despite losing a place in the national executive committee”.
He has over the years been appointed to serve in the organising committee of different tournaments including the Cosafa under -20 tournament played in Botswana in 2011, the Zone VI games held in Zambia in 2012, Caf under-20 championship in Algeria 2013, as well as last year’s COSAFA senior challenge and the under-20 tournament played in Zambia and Lesotho respectively.
The former Lefa PRO has also handled a number of matches as the match commissioner including the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Malephane told the Sunday Express that he already had another appointment for February, as he has been billed to serve as match commissioner for a Caf Confederations Cup preliminary match to be played in Madagascar.
He said he has set his eyes on such large scale tournaments as the African Cup of Nations.
