LRA urgently needs CG: Majoro

Lijeng Ranooe

FINANCE Minister, Moeketsi Majoro, says the newly appointed Lesotho Revenue Authority (LRA) board has an urgent task of scouting for a new Commissioner-General to run the affairs of the authority.

Dr Majoro said this on Thursday in Maseru while unveiling the new LRA board which is chaired by prominent Accounting and Consulting Practitioner, Robert Likhang.

Others appointed to the seven member board are Lindiwe Sephomolo, Ts’ireletso Mojela, Libako Leisanyane, Bohlale Phakoe, Chabeli Ramolise and Lefu Mokaoane.

The LRA was established by the Lesotho Revenue Authority Act no. 14 of 2001 to be the main body responsible for the assessment and collection of revenue on behalf of the government.

“I took a long time to select the LRA board because I wanted to ensure that those who will be elected will have capability to utilise their expertise in overcoming challenges facing the LRA,” Dr Majoro said.

He urged the board to work closely with the LRA management to remedy any difficulties that LRA might be facing.

He also appealed to the new board to scout for a new Commissioner-General, saying this was an issue which needed to be addressed urgently.

The former LRA Board of Directors suspended Commissioner-General, Thabo Khasipe, in February this year allegedly for failing to file his income tax returns from 2007 and 2014.

The suspension was effected barely two months after Mr Khasipe was appointed to the position after a year-long search for a suitable candidate.

Dr Majoro also challenged the new board to uphold the values of transparency and accountability that the LRA was well-known for.

“The role of the board is not that of operating the LRA; it is to oversee and direct the LRA management team and ensure they are functioning according to the relevant laws and policies of the authority.

“LRA has a very high trust rate especially if compared with other parastatals and that reputation should be upheld.

“Strive to promote good workmanship and unity among LRA staff and I will be keen on continually being updated on what is happening at the LRA,” Dr Majoro said.
