MASERU — Local referee Paul Phomane will officiate at next month’s Cosafa Under-20 tournament in South Africa.
Phomane, who will be Lesotho’s only match official at the regional championships, is among a panel of 14 match officials made up of six referees and eight assistants.
The other referees appointed by Cosafa’s referees committee to officiate at the tournament are Alex Tiyehho (Namibia), Simanga Nhleko (Swaziland), Jean-Claude Lebrrosse (Seychelles) and Janny Sikazwe (Zambia).
Phomane is widely regarded as Lesotho’s top referee and handled the recent MGC Supa 8 final.
He was named referee of the tournament at this year’s Top Mount Inter-District competition and the MGC Supa 8.
Eight assistant referees have been chosen for the tournament, namely Julio Lemos Da Silva (Angola), Chalvin Ngolanga (Malawi), Sanjaye Changeea (Mauritius), Alvaro Gimo Patricio (Mozambique), Oswald Mukucha (Zimbabwe), Andrew Rezzer and Luyanda Somi (both South Africa).
The Cosafa tournament takes place in Johannesburg from December 6-15.
Lesotho has been drawn in Group C with Zimbabwe and Botswana. Only the group-winners will progress to the next round.
The Makoanyane XI continued with their preparations for the tournament with a 2-1 win over LCS on Thursday.
Twenty-six players have been called up ahead of the competition, with the touring squad set to be finalised before Thursday.
The participating nations are expected to start arriving in Johannesburg on December 4.
Hosts and defending champions South Africa have been drawn in Group A alongside Namibia, Seychelles and Comoros. Group B comprises Mozambique, Madagascar and Swaziland while Angola, Zambia and Mauritius make up Group D.
Lesotho open their account against Zimbabwe on December 9.
