Linare keeper called to national squad

Sports Reporter

MASERU— Linare goalkeeper Dyke Tšiu has been called up to Leslie Notši’s Likuena squad ahead of Lesotho’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Sao Tome next month. Likuena will play a friendly international match against Botswana on Wednesday in preparations for the Sao Tome match. The match will be played in Rustenburg, South Africa. Tšiu replaces teammate Phoka Matete as one of two goalkeepers in the Likuena squad. The other is current first choice Mohau Kuenane of Lioli. Tšiu joined Botswana side Township Rollers in January and is set to return to Botswana in January. He has been rewarded for his form between the sticks for Tse Tala. Apart from Tšiu, Notši has kept the core of the squad which beat Burundi in a World Cup qualifier last month. Lesotho will face Sao Tome in the second week of January in a preliminary first round Afcon qualifier.

The first leg will be played in Sao Tome on January 8 with the return leg at the Setsoto Stadium on January 15.

The preliminary phase of the qualifiers includes the countries who failed to qualify for the tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in January 2012. Lesotho, Sao Tome, Seychelles and Swaziland are the only four sides that will play in the preliminary first round. Should Lesotho progress Likuena will face Sierra Leone in the second preliminary round, one of 14 head-to-head ties to determine who goes forward to the final round where the 16 teams who made it to the 2012 Afcon event will join the race.
