Likuena striker Makateng joins SA club
SPEEDY Likuena striker, Katleho Makateng, has joined newly-promoted South African DStv premiership outfit, Richards Bay FC.
The Lesotho premier league reigning top goal scorer with 20 goals, has penned a two-year deal with the KwaZulu Natal based club.
The Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) player is expected to leave the country tomorrow to join his new team in preparation for the new season, which starts early next month.
LDF Communications Marketing Manager (CMM), Donny Ntakha, confirmed Makateng’s move to Richards Bay.
“Yes, Richards Bay approached us and showed interest in the player.
“They presented their offer and we accepted it after some serious negotiations. Makateng is now on his way to Richards Bay,” Ntakha told the Sunday Express over the weekend.
Makateng has been firing on all cylinders since he joined LDF last season.
His fine form has also caught the eyes of South African giants, Kaizer Chiefs.
This is after his recent outstanding performance in the 2022 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup where he scored one goal, in a 2-1 victory over Malawi.
He also won two man of the match awards in Likuena colours against Malawi and Mauritius. This was his first COSAFA Cup.
Ntakha confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs have also shown interest in securing Makateng’s services.
“Kaizer Chiefs have shown interest in Makateng. They were however, yet to engage us in formal negotiations,” he said.
Ntakha thanked Makateng for his service to LDF.
“We wish him well. He served LDF with distinction as a player and as a military officer.
“He was one of our key players. He was new in the team and we were hoping to get more from him. His departure has left a huge void in our team.
“However, we couldn’t stay in his way to greener pastures. Who knows, this could be the start of good things to come in his promising career,” he said.
The 23-year-old Leribe born Makateng set the local league alight last season with his devastating form.
He emerged the biggest winner during last month’s 2020/21 Vodacom Premier League (VPL) end of season awards ceremony at Avani Maseru.
Makateng beat Lesotho Correctional Service’s Makara Ntaitsane and Matlama’s Jane Thabantšo to scoop the player of the season and players’ player of the season awards after his impressive run in his first premier league season.
Makateng also walked away with the top goal scorer award after scoring 20 goals in the just ended season. He also beat the Kick4Life duo of Thapelo Mohale and Teboho Montlha to the young player of the season award.
For being top goal scorer, he pocketed M13 500. He also took home M15 000 and M12 000 for winning the player of the year and players’ player awards. The young player of the season award earned him M9500.
Makateng told guests during the ceremony that he was grateful for the support that he received from his teammates and technical team.
He said he was excited to win the top goal scorer award in his first season.
“I am very happy for winning these awards,” Makateng said.
“It is not easy to become the top goal scorer especially for young players like me.”
