Likatola off to Ghana

Moorosi Tsiane

THE national rugby team, Likatola, is set to travel to Ghana for the four-nations Rugby Africa Bronze Cup Tournament that is scheduled for 9 to 13 May this year.

Likatola will play in the first semifinal against Mauritius on the 9th where a win would book them a date with the winners in the match between Ghana and Uganda in the final.

The winners in the final would then qualify for the Silver Cup stage.

The Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR) secretary general, Litšitso Motšeremeli, said the team has been hard at work preparing for the tourney and are scheduled to leave the country on 6 May.

“We have been working hard to prepare the team and we believe in the team that the coach, Roy Nyasha, has selected will do the job and bring us victory.

“The plan is to leave the country next Sunday because our first match will be on Wednesday against Mauritius,” Motšeremeli said.

“Ghana play Uganda on the same day so the winners of both ties will play in the final on 13 May while there would also be a losers’ final.”

Motšeremeli said the teams in the tournament collected the most points in their respective regions from tournaments that were played late last year.

“Our region has 12 nations which were grouped into four groups and the teams that collected the most points qualified for the tournament,” he said.

The team needs to win the Bronze and Silver tournaments for it to entertain a chance to play in the Gold where they will eventually qualify for the World Cup.

He however, bemoaned lack of funds but said the Ministry of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation principal secretary (PS), Seoka Tjoetsane, had assured them of assistance.

“The PS has promised that the ministry will help cater for our trip and they have already paid our subscription fee for the tournament,” Motšeremeli said.
