TOP cycling duo, Tumelo Makae and Likeleli Masitise brought home a silver and bronze medal respectively from the Africa continental Mountain Bike championship that was held in Mauritius from the 12th to the 14th of this month.

Lesotho was represented by a five-member team made up of Phetetso Monese and Teboho Khantši (elite men’s category), Makae and Malefetsane Lesofe (under 23 men) and Masitise in the on elite women category.

They competed against fellow athletes from the host nation, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Morocco.

Monese missed out on bronze by a whisker after he finished fourth and fifth in the elite and marathon category.

Lesofe also missed out after finishing sixth.

Team Manager, Mark West said he was happy with the medals and the overall performance of the team.

“I am happy with their performances,” West said, adding, “I had hoped for more medals but we did well still”.

“They struggled with the weather conditions but at least we managed to finish in positions five and six in the men’s category and Masitise finished fourth in the women’s category.

“This shows there was commitment and I am really satisfied. We now need to go back to drawing board and wait for Lesotho Cycling Association to tell us about our next competition.”

Lesotho is ranked 29th in the International Cycling Union and second in Africa behind South Africa.
