IN a concerted effort to celebrate African narratives and cultivate creativity, the Lesotho chapter of the Africa Writers Conference is set to host a dynamic week-long event from October 27 to November 2 this year.
The event promises to inspire, unite, and empower writers from across the southern African region and beyond.
Held under the theme “Celebrating African Narratives, Uniting Cultures, Empowering Creatives,” the conference aims to showcase the rich tapestry of African stories, foster cross-cultural dialogue, and nurture emerging literary talent.
The gathering will feature keynote speeches from renowned African authors, workshops on storytelling techniques, panel discussions on contemporary African issues, and literary readings that highlight the diverse voices shaping the continent’s literary landscape.
Participants will include writers, publishers, literary critics, and students eager to share their work and collaborate.
As the representative of the southern African region, Lesotho is proud to host this significant gathering for the second time. The event is expected to attract delegates from neighbouring countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, as well as international guests from across the continent and the diaspora.
Vice President of the Lesotho Writers Conference, Sebueng Lephatsa, emphasized that the conference is more than just a literary gathering—it is an initiative to promote African cultural heritage and empower local writers.
“Through this conference, we want to ignite the love and passion for writing among Basotho creatives and prove that, though the journey to becoming a published author is not easy, it is possible,” Ms Lephatsa said.
Workshops on publishing, digital storytelling, and self-promotion will equip participants with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive industry.
Ms Lephatsa also said Basotho writers were often underestimated, but this conference aims to challenge that perception by showcasing local talent.
“Through this platform, we want to prove to the world that Lesotho is more than capable in all aspects of life. We can thrive and excel in whatever we do,” she said.
She added that this year’s edition will include awards to honour Basotho creatives for their contributions and stellar performance in the writing industry.
“By hosting this conference in Lesotho, we want to send a strong message about our country and culture through writing,” Ms Lephatsa added. “At a time when stories shape perceptions and influence global narratives, the Africa Writers Conference in Lesotho seeks to elevate African voices and ensure their stories are told, heard, and celebrated worldwide.”
