MASERU –— Lesotho’s national cricket team finished third at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Africa Regional Division 3 T20 Tournament in Ghana which ended last Saturday.

The result was an improvement on last year’s fifth place finish but it was not enough to see Lesotho progress to the next division.

That honour went to Rwanda who won the tournament after beating Seychelles in the final.

Rwanda will now take part in the ICC Africa Regional World Cup Division 2 League which will start in South Africa next month.

The tournament in Ghana was contested by seven nations in Africa’s lowest rankings pot.

The Division 3 T20 Tournament was played under the shorter 20 over format of the game.

Lesotho has been stuck in Africa cricket’s third tier since the system was introduced six years ago and speaking before their departure the team’s coach Lekoatsa Chaka said their aim was to gain promotion into the higher league.

Lesotho along with Rwanda and Gambia are the only countries who have competed in the Africa regional tournaments over the past six years.

Lesotho was paired in Group A alongside Cameroon and Rwanda.

Lesotho lost to Rwanda by one run in their first match of the competition in close encounter.

The side recovered to beat Cameroon to set up a third place play-off against Morocco.

Ghana has already qualified for the Division 2 League Championship.
