MASERU — The Lesotho DanceSport Association (Ledasa) flew the country’s flag high when they came second at a dancing festival in South Africa last Friday.
Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, and South Africa took part at the 11th June 16 memorial event.
Botswana walked away with the first prize while Swaziland and South Africa came third and fourth respectively.
Ledasa sent eight couples to compete in four categories — beginners, pre-champions junior, pre-champions and champions.
The couples brought home 11 medals — three gold, seven bronze, and a silver medal.
Ledasa spokesperson, Teboho Rakhomo, told Xpress People that the tournament held on June 16 was the associayion’s first formal regional participation.
“This was the first official participation co-ordinated by Ledasa, but local couples have competed at this festival before in their individual capacities,” Rakhomo said.
Rakhomo said Lesotho’s performance had improved tremendously from the last showing.
“Looking at the individual participation, the performance has improved a lot.
“We brought home gold and silver medals this year as opposed to previous years when couples participated as ‘individuals’.”
Rakhomo added that they were now busy preparing to compete at two regional competitions soon.
“We are busy with training for the Harare Open DanceSport Championships on July 23 and the Botswana International DanceSport Competition on July 30,” he said.
Lesotho will be competing in both closed sections for beginners and open sections for pre-champions and champions at the two events.
“We have been sending senior couples to participate at the open section only but this year we will send as many couples as possible from each of our 19 member clubs.
“We want to be able to measure our development so we will have junior couples competing at the beginner sections and seniors for the open sections,” Rakhomo said.Lerato Matheka
