Lerotholi publishes second book

AUTHOR, Bantu Lerotholi has published his second book, Bophelo bo joalo ka sefate whose overriding theme is the appreciation of grandmothers who raise children in the absence of their parents.

It is also aimed at cultivating literacy among Basotho.

Loosely translated to mean ‘life is like a tree’, the Sesotho book is about Tsepo, a young man who was raised by his grandmother after the death of his parents.

He turned out to be a respected man because of the good upbringing and Lerotholi compares his life to that of a tree which was well taken care of by its owner.

“If a tree is watered and pruned from time to time it bears good fruits but if it is neglected it perishes and the same goes for a person who is not raised well as he often engages in things that lead to death,” Lerotholi told Xpress People recently.

“It is commonplace for children to be raised by their grandmothers as they often lose parents at an early age due to various reasons including diseases and accidents.

“The old ladies are seldom recognised for the outstanding job they do under very difficult conditions because they often raise those kids out of their pension funds.”

The book was published by Morija Printers, courtesy of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation.

His first book, From Highlands To Riches was published in 2013 by American company, Strategic Book Publishers and Rights Co.

Lerotholi has released poems which he have been published on post cards.

He said he would visit schools to promote the culture of reading and writing Sesotho stories.

“Local high schools have been using the same Sesotho books as part of their syllabus for a very long time which shows that we no longer produce new books.

“Lesotho has so many heritage stories to be told and if we do not tell these then no one else will.

“Our history will fade into oblivion and the next generation will be ignorant about their origins.”

He said there was no specific age to begin writing, “so I plan to visit schools to educate the youth about the importance of telling our stories to promote the writing and reading culture”.
