Lehata, Sechele on Cuban camp

THE duo of sprinter Mosito Lehata and triple and long jumper Lerato Sechele is in Cuba for a five-week training camp to prepare for the All Africa Games to be staged in Rabat, Morocco from 19 to 31 August 2019.

Sechele and Lehata are still under the Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC) High Performance programme and have traveled with their coach Salas Durant.

The camp started on Friday at the 73rd edition of the Internacional Memorial Barrientos meeting in Havana. This is the premier event in the Caribbean region with 10 countries represented.

Sechele and Lehata have tough competition from athletes from Jamaica, USA, Mexico, Colombia, Bahamas and the hosts Cuba.

According to the LNOC High Performance Coordinator Likeleko Lepitla, the camp is aimed on preparing athletes for the All Africa Games while at the same time pushing towards the qualification for the world Championships and Olympic Games.

“The athletes will compete in different competitions during the five weeks’ camp and they are set to compete in a weeklong contest while they also have smaller competitions in the following weeks,” Lepitla said.

He said Lehata will be working to improve his time while Sechele will be working on to improve her distance in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“The training camp aims to prepare the athletes for the upcoming African Games and to push towards qualification for World Championships and the Olympic Games.

“Sechele will be competing in both long and triple jump while Lehata will compete in the 100m and 200m. Although they are preparing for the All Africa Games, the bigger picture is to get them ready for Tokyo next year,” she said.

The last competition the duo attended was the Gaborone Meeting in April this year where Sechele leaped 5.86 metres to win gold in Long Jump while Lehata, who was making his return a from long injury clocked 10:41 seconds to win silver in 100 metres.
