MASERU — Lesotho Athletics Amateur Association (LAAA) says it expects Lesotho to get some medals during the Southern Region Youth Championships currently underway in Zimbabwe.
The championships started yesterday in Harare and end today.
Lesotho is represented by 11 athletes who have good records of collecting medals in youth competitions.
These include Confederation of Southern African Sports Association (Cosasa) gold medalist Joalane Mpepe and silver medallists, Mapesela Mahloko and ‘Nuku Mohashole.
Mahloko holds a bronze medal as well from the same games.
Last year’s Southern Region Youth Championship silver medallist, Makhale Maseli, is also among the local athletes representing the country.
LAAA public relations officer, Sejanamane Maphathe, told the Sunday Express that the team left Lesotho for Zimbabwe on Thursday.
“We are expecting a lot more medals from this year’s games given that we are sending a youthful and experienced team,” he said.
Lesotho collected four medals — two gold and two silver — in last year’s games in Namibia.
“Given that we collected four medals last year and we now have a great team filled with young blood, we stand a great chance of sweeping medals in all categories we are standing in,” Maphathe said.
The team is expected back in the country on Tuesday.
