Du Preez Liebetrau & Company Attorney and Partner, Kolisang Mochesane Lepholisa, was shot outside the company’s premises in Maseru on Friday afternoon.

According to sources who spoke to the Sunday Express yesterday on condition of anonymity, Attorney Lepholisa (58) was attacked by an unknown gunman as soon as he got into his vehicle.

The assailant, the sources added, had been sitting in a van parked close to Attorney Lepholisa’s car and pounced once the lawyer was about to drive away.

Attorney Lepholisa’s colleague in the same law firm, Advocate Thabo Mpaka, yesterday confirmed the incident to the Sunday Express, adding: “Yes, he was attacked and shot after he just knocked off work yesterday.

“According to a preliminary report given by a security guard (protecting the company’s premises), he (Lepholisa) got out of the gate and proceeded to the parking lot where he had left his car. It was around 4:15pm.

“He got into his vehicle, and as he was preparing to drive away, a man came out of a van parked nearby and approached him.

“The man then opened fire and as soon as he heard the shooting, and Mr Lepholisa’s screams, the guard immediately rushed to the scene, prompting the culprit to run to the van and drive away at speed”.

Adv Mpaka said the security guard did not see how many people were in the vehicle.

Asked about the extent of Attorney Lepholisa’s injuries or his whereabouts, Advocate Mpaka said: “I cannot disclose where he was taken to for security reasons. But I can only say he was taken to hospital.

“The other reason why I can’t disclose his whereabouts is I don’t think his family would be happy about such information being made public because the attackers are still at large and remain unknown up to now.”

However, another lawyer privy to the incident yesterday told the Sunday Express that Mr Lepholisa sustained injuries just above the right eye and on the right ear.

The lawyer could however, not say if these were gunshot wounds or the result of shattered glass from the vehicle.

Contacted for comment, Acting police spokesperson Thato Ramarikhoane  confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm that the police are investigating the shooting of a 58-year-old man next to Du Preez Liebetrau & Co offices yesterday.

“He was shot and hurried to one of the hospitals in South Africa immediately after the incident.

“We have not yet established who the culprit is and we appeal for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect from members of the public,” Snr Insp Ramarikhoane said.
