MASERU — Government has appointed three new principal secretaries.
Sam Rapapa, the ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC) treasurer, is the new Cabinet Principal Secretary for Economic Affairs in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Rapapa, who said he was delighted by the appointment, replaces former Economic Affairs PS, Moliehi Matabane.
Majara Molapo of the Basotho National Party (BNP), a junior partner of Prime Minister Thomas Thabane’s coalition government, has been appointed principal secretary for the ministry of gender and sports.
He replaces former Ts’eliso ‘Mokela who contract ended in August.
Teboho Mohlomi, Rapapa’s colleague in the ABC, is the principal secretary for the police and public safety ministry.
Rapapa said he signed his three-year contract on Friday.
He said he will however start his duties on Wednesday “because I have other business that I was already working on to wrap up”.
“I’ll be the PM’s advisor on economic issues. Before meeting with ministers to discuss economic matters, he will first consult with me. Where research is required, I will do it for him and brief him before he engages ministers,” Rapapa said.
The job, Rapapa added, also means he responsible for the economic affairs of the Food Management Unit (FMU) and the Disaster Management Authority (DMA).
“The DMA are two government departments with an economic impact on Basotho’s lives,” Rapapa said.
Molapo also confirmed his appointment last night.
“I was notified of my appointment in a letter last week, citing that with effect from October 2, I am the ministry’s new PS,” Molapo said.
