MASERU — A 17-year-old girl from Mohale’s Hoek died after she jumped from a moving vehicle in an attempt to flee from men who had allegedly sexually assaulted her last Saturday.
The police said a 31-year-old driver and his assistant aged 27 were taking the girl and her classmates back home from a picnic in Ha Ramokoatsi in Mafeteng.
Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said when everyone else had been dropped home, the driver refused to drop the girl at her house and drove away with her.
He said they suspect the two then sexually assaulted the girl.
“It is alleged that as the car was moving the girl tried to escape by jumping through the window. She was found dead in Ha ’Mapotsaneng,” Masupha said.
The deceased, together with her colleagues, had hired the taxi from Mohale’s Hoek to Mafeteng.
The deceased was a student at a high school in Mohale’s Hoek.
The suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in court soon.
Police are investigating the matter.
In a separate incident, a police constable and his daughter were found dead in their car near the Passport Office in Maseru last Sunday.
They had gunshot wounds.
“When the police arrived at the scene the police constable and his daughter were dead while his son was in a critical condition,” he said.
The boy died in hospital later.
Masupha said they are still investigating the case.
