MASERU — Two South African lifestyle stores, Foschini and Markham, opened their doors to the public at Pioneer Shopping Mall on Friday.

Hundreds of Basotho flocked to the mall on Friday to take advantage of the opening sales and do their winter shopping.

The giants’ entry into Lesotho could signal that the country is readying itself as an attractive niche for investors.

Boithabiso Sibolla, store manager at Markham, said Lesotho’s potential was yet to be fully tapped into.

“As we are a fast-growing company that is not limited to South Africa, we saw a potential in this country as Basotho have been supporting our stores in Ladybrand and Ficksburg (South Africa). We therefore decided to bring services to them,” Sibolla said.

She said after border concession documents popularly known as “six months” and temporary travel documents were phased out in South Africa some customers were taking longer to travel and pay their credit accounts while others drastically reduced their shopping trips.

“This affected our business a lot and these are some of the reasons why we decided to come near our customers.”

Kim Berg, Foschini area manager, said business was “booming” on the first day of trading.

“The launch was successful and all I can say is that business is booming. We found customers to be extremely friendly and wonderful to work with.

Centre manager of Pioneer Shopping Centre, Tšepo Putsoa, said the development would help quench consumers’ thirst for choice.

“On the food and groceries shops the customers were fine but the problem was on clothing shops as there was no variety,” Putsoa said.
