Duo gets two-year sentence for murder

MASERU — Two men from Mohale’s Hoek have been sentenced to two years in prison or a fine of M1 500 each
after they were convicted for armed robbery. Hareteke Moteka, 26, and Motlatsi Sekhonyana, 29, were charged with armed robbery. The court heard how the duo robbed Ntsane Makhetha of cash amounting to M70 and a cell phone at
Timberland Night Club in Maseru on March 31. The two also threatened to shoot him if he resisted, the court heard.

Sekhonyana was also charged with stealing cell phones from patrons at Lekhaloaneng. Moteka and Sekhonyana pleaded guilty as charged and did not oppose the complainant’s statement made in court. In mitigation Moteka said he assists his unemployed parents while Sekhonyana told the court he was a student at Qoaling. The court ordered that the stolen cell phone be returned to the owner.

Advocate Thaba Ramolala represented the crown while Magistrate Senekane Qobolo presided over the case. Meanwhile, police in Mafeteng said they are investigating the murder of a 60-year-old woman and her grandchild who were shot and killed by unknown gunmen on Tuesday night. The police said the two were found lying in a pool of blood by neighbours in Ha Ramokoatsi early on Wednesday.
The Officer Commanding Mafeteng Police Senior Superintendent Mpota Nthako said they believed the suspect forcefully gained entry into the house through a window as the door was locked. Nthako condemned the killing adding the police were worried with the increasing cases of murder in Mafeteng district. At least one murder case is reported at most police posts in Mafeteng every month, he said.

Nthako appealed for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect. Police investigations are continuing.
