ORGANISERS of a counter event to the Maletsunyane Braai Festival in Semonkong have scoffed at allegations of sabotage, saying their event was independent and meant to benefit the community.

The Maletsunyane Braai Fest, which is organised by OTB Exclusive Events, will be held on 25 and 26 November 2017.

A counter event, dubbed 120 BBQ Braai Fest, is being organised by the “youth of Semonkong” and scheduled for a week earlier, on 18 and 19 November.

Both events allow people to bring their own meat, drinks and braai stands. The only difference is that with the Maletsunyane Braai Festival, there will an entrance free of M180 while the other is free of charge.

OTB representative, Tichere Pule had told XpressPeople last month that they did not believe the counter event would happen but everything was stage-managed to create confusion.

“As much as we have not done assessment on how the event may affect ours, we do not believe it is real but rather a plot to confuse people and stop them from attending ours,” Pule said.

“We do not believe it is real because there is no one who has been identified as the organiser. However, we already have a suspicion as to who is behind the propaganda as there is this one person who has been circulating news on Facebook that our event will not go ahead since the community is against it.”

However, this past week 120 BBQ Braai Fest representative, Thabo Thabang, told this publication their event would continue as planned and was independent of the other festival.

“We came together as the youth of Semonkong in area code 120 to develop this festival because we realised that almost every person that visits the falls often tends to have a braai here. So, we are just seizing the opportunity that will benefit the community at large,” Thabang said.

“We have no plans of sabotaging the other event, since the dates are different. We are beginners and that is why our event is free so we can gain momentum; it is a marketing strategy to be precise.

“In the upcoming editions, we will charge a fee as there are facilities such as mobile toilets which we need to rent.”

He also mentioned that the people of Semonkong would benefit by using stalls at the event and also be hired as security and parking marshals.

“They will also get the opportunity to rent out their horses and donkeys to the visitors,” said Thabang.

“He also said that people who wanted to sleep over could bring their own camping gear or rather arrange with the community regarding home stays.”
