MASERU — A group of 44 Chinese acrobats put up a magical performance at Mathabiseng Convention Centre on Monday night.
The China National Acrobatic Troupe was in the country as part of a cultural exchange programme between Lesotho and the People’s Republic of China.
The group’s visit was also aimed at celebrating China’s New Year, also known as the Dragon New Year.
The acrobats performed Rhythm Ball Catching, Precision Rope Skipping, Dexterity Umbrella Juggling, Little Gorgeous Girl’s Diabolos and flourishing magic.
China’s Ambassador to Lesotho Hu Dingxian said the year of the Dragon symbolised power and prosperity.
Dingxian said the China National Acrobatic Troupe was founded in 1950 by the Chinese government and became the first troupe to perform abroad.
The group has inherited the art of classical Chinese acrobats while also exploring new performance styles over the past 60 years.
It has since performed in more than 120 countries gaining international acclaim.
Tourism Minister ‘Mannete Ramaili said cooperation between Lesotho and China would boost development in both countries.
“This partnership will enable the two to fight against HIV/Aids, poverty as well as protecting the environment,” Ramaili said.
“The China National Acrobatic Troupe’s performance makes great contributions to the development of acrobatics and strengthens the friendship between China and other countries, especially Lesotho.”
