THE Chinese government has donated grains valued at M26 million as part of efforts to address the severe food crisis affecting many Basotho households.
The donation, which includes white rice, parboiled rice, and wheat, comes at a crucial time when numerous families are struggling to afford basic meals due to rising living costs and the impact of climate change on agriculture.
The commodities were handed over by the Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho, Yang Xiaokun, to the government of Lesotho, represented by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Limpho Tau, and Foreign Affairs and International Relations Minister, Lejone Mpotjoane.
As the country continues to face the challenges of climate change and food scarcity, this donation serves as a critical intervention, reaffirming the importance of international solidarity in addressing global crises.
In his address, Mr Xiaokun emphasized that the food crisis was a global concern requiring joint efforts to tackle.
“We are committed to helping our friends in Africa, including Lesotho, overcome these challenging times,” Mr Xiaokun said, urging collective action to combat the adversities caused by climate change.
He also underscored China’s longstanding support for Lesotho, which included dispatching 18 batches of medical experts. WHEN ?
“We are willing to continue working hand in hand with the government of Lesotho to deepen cooperation in various sectors.”
Lesotho has been grappling with a severe food crisis, leaving many households without a reliable source of nutrition. This humanitarian initiative seeks to provide immediate relief while also strengthening community resilience against fluctuating climate conditions.
Minister Tau expressed gratitude for the generous donation, noting its significance in mitigating hardships faced by vulnerable populations.
“This support underscores the strong bilateral relationship between China and Lesotho, with ongoing collaboration aimed at enhancing food security and improving livelihoods,” he said.
He further stressed that the donation would serve as a lifeline for many households struggling with food insecurity due to climate change’s devastating effects on agriculture.
“The food will provide sustenance to vulnerable communities, alleviating hunger and restoring hope.”
