Bravo LBA President

Moorosi Tsiane

LESOTHO Basketball Association president Francis Koma released an official statement regarding the unsettling matters in his organisation this week following the resignations of four executive committee members.

The members are Fako Masupha- director development, Bokang Pharela-director referees and table officials, Relebohile Lebatla-director women in sport and a public relations officer Ntoko Marake.

The statement alludes to the problems that the committee has been having since it was voted into office in January last year.

Koma pleads: “The AGM is the highest decision-making body of the LBA and it is therefore my humble plea that, let us allow this important organ to deal with these matters”.

“All members of the executive are elected by the congress during the AGM, it is therefore proper to allow it to decide on the way forward and on the fate of those executive committee members.

“As the President of LBA I am announcing that the date for the AGM has been schedule for the 3rd of March 2019.”

Ever since it was elected last year, the LBA committee has not done much for basketball in the country apart from their infighting which saw their secretary general Retšelisitsoe Lephaila resign just few days after assuming office.

It really was no surprise when four other members decided to follow suit because it has been evident that there was disunity in the new committee which took over from an ironically determined team led by Molupe Mothepu.

Unfortunately, the former committee had to step aside as the LBA constitution doesn’t allow members to be part of the committee for more than two terms.

Under this new committee, it was an arduous job to just get mere updates on the league matches, something the media and basketball supporters never had to worry about during the tenure of the previous team.

Numerous things went wrong during the tenure of the latest committee and unfortunately the sport is always the one to suffer as has been the case where the hype we used to associate with the sport has long disappeared.

Even big matches between three top rivals such as Khubetsoana All Stars, Bashana Ba Heso and Lichocha Shooting Rifles had just become ordinary matches which no longer had supporters’ blood rushing.

The sport is now in limbo since only the president Koma, deputy Tefo Mosala, secretary general Mamokoena Nhlapo and treasure Refiloe Matsau remain in the committee. This has rendered the committee defunct as they need three quarters of the committee to pass decisions.

This committee was elected into power by a congress and when things are not going as they had planned, I think it is only wise that they also go back to the same people who elected them and map the way forward.

I want to commend Koma for calling for an AGM which will be hosted in 03rd March to find a way forward.  He showed real maturity handling this manner and true leadership qualities.

Bravo Ntate Koma!
