Dona@Balos Chef and Hospitality School students held a braai festival at the restaurant’s Thetsane premises to raise funds for seven students’ participation in an international cooking competition in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The students will take part in the Alan Thong Young Chefs Golden Coffee Pot competition from 5 to 7 December 2016.

At yesterday’s fund-raising initiative, the Diploma students were divided into four groups that competed to serve the best braai dishes to patrons.

The four groups were Le’ Flavour, Maluti, Carling Blue Label and Robertsons. They each served patrons who in turn, voted for the best dish.

Since the theme was braai-oriented, every meal that was served had been prepared on the braai stands. Food lovers were treated to different kinds of meat dipped in different kinds of sources as well as vegetables which were also prepared on naked flames.

For starters, the Le’ Flavour group treated connoisseurs to boerewors quiche- a dish of boerewors prepared with vegetables.  The Carling Blue Label presented a dish of eggs and cheese, pasta prepared with vegetables while Robertsons prepared fish, sausages, lemon and rosemary. The Maluti group prepared kebabs.

Maluti Mountain Brewery took the opportunity to promote their Castle Draught of beer where after tasting for free, patrons were offered a 500ml glass of the beverage for just M15.

It was a fun-filled affair which could not be spoilt even by bad weather as revelers simply moved inside the restaurant to continue the party. The disc spinners kept the carnival atmosphere going by belting out a succession of club hits.

Overall, it was unique outdoor event, a welcome change from the usual fare of turn-up settings or gala dinners.

Some patrons brought along their camping chairs so that they could relax and enjoy the event under the umbrella shades while also cooling their bodies with different beverages on offer in the Dona@Balos Restaurant. The winners were still to be announced at the time of going to press.
