BNP youth league spokesperson faces murder charge
THE Basotho National Party (BNP) Youth League spokesperson, Manama Letsie, briefly appeared before the High Court on Wednesday charged with murder.
Mr Letsie, who is also the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) vice-president at the National University of Lesotho (NUL), is accused of killing one Sepiriti Lebesa-Khohlokoane eight years ago.
Although the court is yet to be furnished with full details of the case, the Sunday Express has been told by Mr Letsie’s lawyer, Advocate Lepeli Molapo, that the incident allegedly took place on 19 December 2006.
According to Advocate Molapo, Mr Letsie is accused of fatally shooting Mr Lebesa-Khohlokoane in Ha Thamae, Maseru, on suspicion he had stolen his vehicle.
“My client is alleged to have shot Mr Lebesa-Khohlokoane on 19 December 2006 in Ha Thamae. But more details will be heard in court when the case continues,” he said.
Asked why the case was only being heard now after the incident took place eight years ago, Advocate Molapo said “many factors” had led to the case failing to be heard in the courts of law.
On Wednesday, Justice Semapo Peete, postponed the case to 25, 26 and 27 November 2014, after the crown’s Advocate Motšehi Tlali asked for adjournment citing witnesses were not present in court.
While postponing the matter, Justice Peete said: “I want this case to be uninterrupted as it proceeds because it a serious criminal matter. I always prefer that criminal matters be taken with the seriousness they deserve.”
