MASERU — Alliance Francaise Maseru will hold a solidarity dinner concert to raise funds for the French language and cultural organisation’s chapters in Haiti whose offices were destroyed in January’s deadly earthquake.

The earthquake killed an estimated 230 000 people and left a million others homeless.

Alliance Francaise Maseru cultural co-ordinator Grazilla Laude said the local branch had planned to host the dinner concert, set for Maseru Sun Hotel on Friday, to raise funds towards the reconstruction of the Haiti offices.

“The Alliances Françaises of Haiti have been severely damaged by the earthquake of January 12th, two of them being destroyed,” Laude said.

“They used to play an important role in the social and educational lives of Haitians.

“This fundraising event aims at helping them to rebuild and purchase the necessary equipment in order to reopen as soon as possible.”

A raffle draw will be held at the dinner concert, with a television set, bicycle, household items, dinner and accommodation vouchers as well as cash among the prizes.

Entertainment will be provided by Maseru Vocal Waves, Police Jazz Band, Karma and Thoriso Band.

Children from Machabeng College will sing French and Creole songs.

Alliance Francaise Maseru director Jean-Yves Carnino said proceeds from the dinner concert would help the Haitian community at large.
