All set for chess tournament

Chess Federation of Lesotho secretary general Moshe Mokone says all is set for the National Chess Championship Finals to be held from 15-16 November at Scenery Guesthouse in Maseru.

According to Mokone, winners of the tournament’s male and female categories would represent the country in the Africa Individual Chess Championship scheduled for Namibia next month.

“Our preparations for the tournament are in order, and we expect the event to be highly competitive because of what is at stake.

“As you might be aware, the winners will qualify for the Africa Individual Chess Championship to be held in Namibia in December, so we expect fireworks at the Finals,” Mokone said.

Mokone further noted in addition to booking a berth at the Namibia tournament, the victorious lady and her runner-up would also receive M800 and M500, respectively. The male winner, runner-up and second runner-up would pocket M1500, M1300 and M1000, respectively, Mokone added.

“This is a mixed tournament where male and female players will be taking on each other but we have reserved M800 and M500 as prizes for the two top ladies as part of encouraging them to continue with the sport,” said Mokone.

“Our ladies have shown great improvement, but there is still room for improvement, hence this little incentive to encourage them to continue taking the sport seriously.”
