PREPARATIONS are on track for the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) ball games to be staged in the country from 29 August to 3 September 2017, a representative of the organising committee has said.
Local Organising Committee marketing and publicity official, Nteboheleng Mahasela said preparations were “at an advanced stage,” adding, so far Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe had confirmed their participation.
“We will have under-13 and under-17 teams competing in different ball games including football, rugby, cricket, netball and basketball.
“In last edition we brought home gold medals in under 13 and under 17 football and we finished four in netball in both age groups. It was a good performance but we want to surpass that this year.”
She said the games would be staged in Maseru urban.
She however, said Lesotho was yet to select its teams as this would only be done at the Lesotho Institutions Sports Associations (LISA) national ball games from 11 to 13 of August.
“We are yet to make the final selections of our teams because the coaches are waiting for the LISA national ball games.
“Of course it might be late to form a squad at such short notice but there is nothing that we can do as we are controlled by the budget we get from the government,” Mahasela said.
She said the tournament was important as it gave players a chance to compete at international level at a young age and also helped national federations in selecting junior squads.
“It is important for us as the country to participate such tourneys because they give our players international exposure from an early age.
“It also helps our federations to identify players for the junior national teams,” she said.
